Operation New Hope is a partnership program between the Chatham County Sheriff's Office and various animal rescue organizations throughout the area. It gives unadoptable dogs in our community a second chance and helps rehabilitate inmates in the Chatham County Detention Center.
Rescue organizations bring a total of 16 dogs to the jail each month for a four week training course. The dogs live in the cell with pre-selected, low-risk inmates and are partnered with them 24/7. The inmates will learn valuable responsibility and animal care skills through dog training
The dogs are taught several obedience lessons, such as becoming housebroken and crate trained. These skills are aimed to make the dogs more appealing to families looking to adopt a new pet. All dogs receive an AKC/CGC certificate awarded by the Operation New Hope facility dog trainer.
Operation New Hope is being paid for by private donations and no tax dollars are used to fund the program. To see the latest participants and adoptable animals, please visit Operation New Hope on Facebook.
