Poker Run Proceeds

100% of the proceeds from the Poker Run benefit the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes. Each year, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office throws a Christmas party for the children at the home and this poker run funds that, as well as a large purchase that the home needs.

In 2017, $20,000 worth of furnishings were purchased for the home in Hahira and in 2018, $25,000 was contributed toward the cost of a new generator.

Founded in 1956, the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes serves hundreds of children across four campuses located in Hahira, Dalton, LaGrange and Nunez, Ga. They provide a secure future for needy children all over Georgia. These homes are run as a large family. The family provides love, guidance, discipline and the children can live at the ranch as long as necessary.

The Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes was formed by a group of Sheriff’s in the 1960’s and is a private, non-profit organization. Today, the youth homes are still sponsored by these Sheriffs through the Georgia Sheriff’s Association and many generous citizen donations. It is the mission of the Georgia Sheriff’s to continue to provide the best possible care for the dependent, neglected, abandoned and abused children of Georgia.

History of the Poker Run

When Sheriff John T. Wilcher was a major with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, he came up with the idea to hold a poker run to raise money for the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes. Now in its 17th year, the Poker Run has raised over $400,000 and has grown from 342 riders in 2001 to more than triple that today. Riders from all over Georgia, Florida and the Carolina’s look forward to coming to Savannah to ride for these children.
